BTEC First Diploma in Hospitality

The course will enable you to develop practical skills required in the Hospitality Industry. This will involve planning and running a hospitality event, in order to apply your practical skills to realistic business situations. You therefore have the opportunity to work as part of a team to prepare, cook and present food for a specific occasion (e.g. banquet event).

The Culinary Skills unit includes some basic maths for costing dishes, and the study of stock control, finance.  The level 2 Food Hygiene certificate is also offered to students

Most units in the course require you to look at the business aspects of the Hospital Industry such as Customer Relations, Health & Safety Legislation, Serving Food and Drink and Healthy Lifestyles and the Hospitality Business.

The First Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at A* - C

Career Routes

The hospitality industry is one of the largest areas of employment and consequently has a range of career opportunities.

This course will enable you to develop highly transferable skills which are suited to any career route.

The units studied for the BTEC provide a sound basis for progression onto a variety of advanced courses such as BTEC National Awards.

Structure of the Course

Students will study 6 units in total over the 2 years, including 4 compulsory units and 2 optional units. All units are assessed by coursework and marked internally.

BTEC Hospitality & Catering First Diploma is a course that involves developing practical skills in food preparation, cookery and food service.

Year 10 Hospitality Students demonstrated customer care, showing high levels of professionalism in the preparation, cooking and serving of four evening pre-theatre dinners prior to performances of ‘Les Misérables’ in March 2006, and "We Will Rock You" in March 2008.

Students are encouraged to organise events whereby they can develop their skills through practical experience in a realistic working environment.
