BTEC First Diploma in Science

This new specialist work-related (Vocational) qualification focuses on Applied Science and reflects aspects of employment within Science organisations or those that use science. It will appeal to those students who prefer a coursework based approach covering a variety of scientific investigations and issues.

You will learn about the nature of the work within science based industries, sometimes taking on the role of being employed within the science industry.

The First Diploma in Applied Science is equivalent to four GCSE grades A* to C and is 100% internally assessed.

Structure of the Course

Two Compulsory Units: Scientific Principles and Science and World of Work

Four Optional units chosen from:

  • Working with Science
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Environment Science
  • Plants and Food
  • Forensic Science Applications
  • Science in Medicine

The units are assessed on a regular basis using a series of assignments and activities with no external examinations.

Career Routes

On completion of this course you would be able to progress onto GCE Applied Science, BTEC Nationals in Applied Science or other science related Applied Science courses like NVQ’s in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities.

This qualification provides a route to a career as a Science Technician or assistants who work in a wide variety of organisations that use science such as Quality Control Technician or Medical Physics Technicians, Analytical Technicians, Clinical Assistants and Laboratory Technicians.
